about

This recording is the first pannel of an eight-hour improvised musical performance recorded at the Espace de l'Art Concret, Château de Mouans, Mouans Sartoux, Alpes Maritimes, on June 4, 2000.
The aim of this project was to bring together two forms of artistic expression:
Plastic art with the exhibition "Magdalena Jitrik et Renée Levi, Filles indignes de l'Art Concret", and music with my intervention.

As an amateur but not a connoisseur of contemporary art, my visits to art centres and galleries always left me vaguely dissatisfied. More often than not, the profusion of works on display and the inevitable brevity of the viewing time didn't allow me to establish much more than a superficial relationship with the work of the artist on show. As my appreciation of visual art is essentially subjective, I've noticed that when the rare opportunity arises, long-term observation enables me to enter more deeply into the work, and to draw out impressions that are all the stronger by being evolutive.
This gave rise to the idea of placing loudspeakers on various spots of the exhibition space and, using digital loopers, to send them improvised musical constructions that would evolve during my observation.

The music resulting from this approach thus acquires a plastic character, insofar as each complete construction (i.e. the sound result perceived when listening to all the loudspeakers) is thereby exhibited statically and can be visited by moving from one loudspeaker to another during the exhibition tour.
This "interactivity" between the visitor-listener and the music is not the same as listening to a CD, of course, limited to two channels. This is why this recording, taken out of the context in which it was made, should be considered more as a musical testimony.

In order to preserve the authenticity of this testimonial document, a few technical imperfections (clicks, saturation, cuts) have been retained.
